Fall 2021 New Releases to put on your TBR immediately

September 20, 2021 at 11:31 AM by Brandi Cummings

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  No, not the holiday season--it’s fall publishing season! There are three publishing cycles most of the publishing houses follow: Winter (January-April), Summer (May-August) and Fall (September-December). In summer, we get a lot of the beach reads and what I affectionately call the “Airport Dad Novels” (you know the spy thrillers and action paperbacks you often see in the airport bookstore?). In the fall, we get what seems like everything. Literary fiction, thrillers, cute holiday-themed rom-coms, horror to scare our pants off on crisp fall nights, and mysteries to keep us warm in those early snowy days, while sitting by the window watching snow come down with a book and a cup of tea. Grab a pen and fill up your TBR (and your hold list!) with some of the most anticipated books this fall!

The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed The Thursday Murder Club last year and I have been waiting for this one since it was announced! Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes-style mysteries, this cheeky group of British retirees will charm you as they solve murder mysteries. This is the next installment in what I hope will be a long series. Release date: September 28, 2021.

Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney

Rooney’s previous novel, Normal People, was so popular it was adapted into an Emmy-nominated Hulu show. Rooney is one of the highest profile novelists currently exploring millennial coming-of-age stories, in all of their angsty, underemployed, unrequited love glory. Expect more of the same in this new book. Release date: September 7, 2021.

L.A. Weather by Maria Amparo Escandon

I’ve been seeing this one everywhere--it’s got a lot of buzz and many good reviews. The book focuses on the trials and tribulations of a wealthy Mexican-American family in L.A. This is also probably one of the best covers I’ve seen all year (and yes, I do judge a book by its cover without shame.) Put it on hold now before it’s picked up by a celebrity book club. Release date: September 7, 2021.

Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune

Klune hit it big last year with The House in the Cerulean Sea. This is another contemporary fantasy novel sure to be a New York Times’ Bestseller. Wallace dies and the grim reaper deposits him in a tea shop, rather than the afterlife, giving him seven days to live the life that he missed out on. I’m late on the TJ Klune train (House has been sitting on my Kindle unread for months), but his books are much beloved and I’m looking forward to this one. Release date: September 21, 2021.

White Smoke by Tiffany Jackson

It wouldn’t be a fall list, if we didn’t have some horror on it! This is a YA novel, but Jackson has a lot of crossover appeal. You may have seen her previous title, Grown, spotlighted on the staff picks shelf. I’m a huge fan of haunted house stories and I’m also obsessed with this cover. Release date: September 14, 2021.

Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty

Moriarty is the undisputed book club queen of domestic fiction. Her previous novels, Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers were both turned into critically-acclaimed screen adaptations. Her latest explores the dark side of marriage and family when a wife and mother goes missing. The husband is at the center of her disappearance, fracturing the siblings’ tight-knit bond.  Release date: September 14, 2021.
