Tonight Show Summer Reads @KPL!

Have you heard the buzz? The Tonight Show is starting a summer book club and you know this is our JAM over at KPL! Naturally, we are having a book discussion to dig into this popular new release.
Not sure what I am talking about? Let me back it up and drop some pop culture/bookish knowledge to bring you up to speed.

At the end of June, late-night talk show host and comedian extraordinaire Jimmy Fallon excitedly presented a segment on The Tonight Show announcing he is starting a book club for the summer, called "Tonight Show Reads."
He showcased five titles he thinks could be the must-read book of the summer, seen under everyone's arm as they head into the sunshine. Those titles were:

The Good Son by You-Jeong Jeong

I.Q. by Joe Ide

Providence by Caroline Kepnes

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin

The Tonight Show opened up a vote between these five books and over 140,000 people voted. The winner, by an incredible margin, was Children of Blood and Bone!

Check out this book description:

They killed my mother
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.

Now we rise.

Zèlie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zèlie's Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, Zèlie without a mother and her people without hope.
maji were killed, leaving

Now Zèlie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zèlie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zèlie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.

Children of Blood and Bone is a book that has a lot of excitement surrounding it, starting even before it was released this past March. So much so, that it has already been picked up for a movie deal! This is pretty incredible for a debut novel (especially right out of the gate) and a great choice for a summer read. Plus, as Jimmy mentions in the video linked above, Adeyemi is being compared to J.K. Rowling and George R.R. Martin, which (at least for this millennial) is an incredible compliment and further testament to the power and popularity of this book.
