Virtual Storytimes

Join us for weekly virtual storytimes on Facebook Live as we celebrate Black History Month by highlighting Black authors, illustrators, and protagonists! Check out the weekly schedule below:

Toddler Storytime: Mondays & Thursdays at 10:30 AM

Preschool Storytime: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Fridays at 10:30 AM, Tuesdays at 6:30 PM

Family Storytime: Thursdays at 6:30 PM

In the Making: Grown Up Crafting Kits-Celebrating Modern & Contemporary Black Artists
Registration: February 9-13
Pickup: February 16-20

We are taking our love of crafting, packing it up, and sending it home with you to create! Our craft kits, along with some basic household items, will help you create a new piece of decor, self-care, or wearable item. Supplies are limited, registration will open at 9:00 am on Tuesday, February 9.  This box will be available for pick-up at Southwest or Northside on February 16.  Celebrating Modern & Contemporary Black Artists-Join us in celebrating modern and contemporary artists for Black History Month, this class focuses on 2 of the 11 artist prompts by black artists; Lorna Simpson and Wangechi Mutu. Old Weird America: Unusual Slave Narratives
Thursday, February 11th

Not light-heartedly weird, but remarkable and courageous, were lengths to which some enslaved people went to escape their enforced captivity. Join historian Cathy Polovina as she follows her curiosity and explores "Old Weird America," to look a bit closer at a variety of adventurous, innovative, and unusual characters throughout American history. 32nd Annual African American Read-In
Saturday, February 13th

The African-American Read-In is going virtual! Celebrate Black History Month by joining us for this great Facebook Live event. You'll Enjoy short readings authored by African-Americans and read by youth, adults, and local community leaders. Novels at Night Book Club
Tuesday, February 16th

The first rule of Book Club is: tell everyone about Book Club! Join Emily for this monthly book club that talks about edgy contemporary novels that are slightly off the beaten path. Read to Me: A Grownup Storytime
Wednesday, February 17th

Grab your lunch and join us for a story! Once a month, enjoy a short story, an excerpt from a book, or a collection of poetry. It’s like an audiobook - but LIVE! This week, we celebrate Black History Month and will be having Zander Miller performing works by Langston Hughes. Register here!

Teen Book Club (ages 12-19)
Wednesday, February 17th
4:30 - 5:30 PM

February is Black History Month! Celebrate with a free book* and thoughtful chat. Join Teen Librarians Alejandria and Susannah for a virtual book discussion of "Pride" by Ibi Zoboi. This contemporary remix of Pride & Prejudice, set in Brooklyn, stars teens who find love while dealing with gentrification and racism.

*The first 10 teens to register for the book club will receive their own copy of the book to keep. Books will be made available for pickup at the Southwest Library in advance of the program. Registration is required. Register here!
